GAINS® - Getting Along IN Society

The data continue to show that a main ingredient necessary for a child or youth to:  1) stay in their birth home; 2) stay and improve in school; 3) find and maintain employment; and, 4) successfully participate in recreational and competitive arts and athletics is being able to "get along."  One example and a key Interpersonal Life Skill in the "getting along" category is the social response of the youth or child when given a request by an adult.  If the youth or child does not respond in a relatively specific way at least 85% of the time he or she will find themselves facing a decreasing range of life options.

GAINS® is an Interpersonal Skills (English) development model.   A parent/teacher/staff resource for use with children and youth who are having difficulty "getting along."  It can be used for a variety of special needs, conditions, and ages as well as in open and closed settings.  Interpersonal Skills (Spanish) development strategies that are the most effective provide:

  1. similar and practical life-skills applicable to multiple settings (i.e., home, school, work, recreation, associations, membership, community, etc.);

  2. individualized instruction; and,

  3. opportunities to practice in natural settings with observation and feedback.
